Topps Pays Up - Distributes Cards & Pay Checks

Saturday, players of the New York Mets received packs of 2010 Topps Baseball cards, along with the pay checks they earned for appearing on the cards.

According to the NY Daily News, the cards - not the checks - were the main attraction. Nelson Figueroa and Mike Pelfrey started to broker deals on the spot.

"He traded a (Tim) Lincecum for a (Clayton) Kershaw and (Mark) Teixeira," Figueroa said about Pelfrey.

Sunday Scroll: Sports Card Blogs & Sites Show Love

Sports Card Report has received some unsolicited love from around the hobby world the past two weeks. Here are the sites who have taken the time to link to SCR.

B-Ball Card Pro - Nick does a nice job at analyzing possible investments in basketball cards.  I personally enjoy sites that look at the trading card game from a business perspective and am glad Nick sought me out.

Broken Controllers - I ended up on a RSS feed somehow for some of the 2010 Allen & Ginter articles I wrote.  Thanks for posting!

Minor League Baseball Prospects - Matt does a real nice job with this prospect fan blog. Baseball is cranking up and I've been heading over to Matt's site as well brushing up on the next wave of talent about to reach the MLB.

The Sewingmachineguy on Cards - This blog has everything to do with cards and nothing to do with sewing. Well worth checking out some of the posts, a lot of good stuff on old vintage baseball. The blog owner was kind enough to put Sports Card Report on it's blogroll.

Field Level View - A site that has been a resource for Sports Card Report on multiple occasions. This site can be considered an 'insider' blog of sorts, and is a must read for anyone interested in the inter-workings of the hobby.

Sports Card Radio - Big thanks to Sports Card Radio! Made Sports Card Report a custom banner, and put us in the 1952 Topps page. That's how to hook a brother up!

Friday's Future Star: Chris Carter - Oakland Athletics

Chris Carter is a familiar name in the world of sports. Former Minnesota Vikings WR Chris Carter can now be seen on ESPN and if you are not careful you can mix up the two Chris Carter's in Baseball.

The Chis we are referring to won the California League Player of the Year with 39 Home Runs playing in the Oakland A's minor league system. He is considered by many to be one of the top prospects in baseball.

I saw Chris play in person in late 2008, and I must say, the guy was biggest dude on the field by a mile. He is every bit of his listed 6-4".

2007 Bowman Chrome Chris Carter #210

Seen here in a White Sox Uniform as he was traded to Oakland in the Dan Haren deal. Refractor Versions make for good investments as well, and sell for modest prices on eBay.

Vintage Zeenut Baseball Cards

The official site of Minor League Baseball has a great story today about the San Francisco based candy company who produced the Pacific Coast League Zeenut Baseball cards between 1911-38.

Over the years the Zeenut sets included Joe Dimaggio, Jim Thorpe and even troubled actor Roscoe Arbuckle. Zeenut was the first baseball card set to include a black athlete on their cards, Oakland Oaks pitcher Jimmy Claxton. In 2005, a Jimmy Claxton Zeenut card sold at a Sotheby's auction for $7,200. Be sure to check out the full article for more Zeenut information.

Sunday Scroll: Sports Card Report's Favorite Websites & Blogs

Here are a few sports and trading card websites that I've visited over the course of the week. The website ranking is according to Alexa's United States traffic rank.

In no particular order:

Blowout Forums -Rank: 14,440
I will head over here a couple times a day to read what the pulse on the hobby is like. Not really big on doing too many posts, mostly I like to just see what others are talking about, and Blowout does a great job putting news about products on the forum as well.

When The Giants Come To Town - Rank: 460,152
This is a fan blog that focuses on the farm system of the S.F. Giants. I first found Dr. B on the S.F. Giants message board and am glad he started his own blog so I can stay updated without digging through posts on a message board. If you are a fan of the Giants, or into baseball prospects, this is a great place to go.

AZ Giants - Rank: 5,335,095
Another fantastic fan blog for Giants fans. He gets great pictures at Spring Training every year, that are well worth checking out. Great photography. He even snapped some pictures of Bryce Harper in his first J.C. game a few weeks back.

Sports Card Radio - Rank: 67,481
From it's monthly podcast, to it's product reviews, Sport Card Radio is starting to become a force in the hobby information world. The site gets updated everyday with something fresh, so it's nice to go check out what's going on.

Twitter - Rank: 12
Twitter has it's fair share of haters, but it's actually a good place to go for a "baseball card news stream" of sorts.  Most of the trading card bloggers and site owners are on Twitter, so it keeps me updated on what is going on throughout the hobby.

Voice Of The Collector - Rank: 223,749
I always seem to end up here a couple times a week because the content of the blog is unique and varies from day to day. From vintage stuff, to hobby business information, it covers a lot of topics that I enjoy reading about.

Lakers Ground Forum - Rank: 5,335
This is by far the most popular Lakers forum on the web, and I've been a member for about 4 or 5 years. It's hard to get a word in over there, as it is one of the most active sports forums on the web.

MLB Trade Rumors -  Rank: 1,860
I have a soft spot for this website because I have been going there for several years, and remember back when nobody had heard about the site. Now it is one of the most popular baseball sites in the world, and is a place I still go everyday.

If anything, this weeks websites prove just where Sports Card Report's fan allegiance lies. I will do my best to troll the web looking for sites not Laker and Giants related!

TTM Request Comes 15 Years Later

Sending out cards to get autographed through the mail can be hit or miss. Sometimes the athlete signs, and sometimes you might get nothing back in return. Getting an autograph back is a very exciting thing. Knowing that person took the time to autograph your card and send it back to you makes you want to send out more. Who cares how long it takes to get a card back. Right?

Well the NY Post had an interesting TTM story today.  Mark Roth of Brooklyn would send out cards when he was a kid. Now 27, Mark got a call from his dad asking if he'd been sending cards out again. He replied that he hadn't sent any out for 15 years. So it came as a surprise when a 1992 Kevin Appier autograph showed up in the mail. Appier has been retired from baseball since 2004, so he must now be finding time to sign some fan mail.

The Post did try and contact Appier for comment, but were unable to reach him. Appier's sister, Jeri, did say that Kevin never forgot about fan mail, and that the Royals had recently sent Kevin a box with stuff left over from Appier's time with the team.

How Much Are The 2010 UD Baseball SP's Worth?

Ryan Cracknell over at Trader Crack's Blog clued me into the 2010 Upper Deck Baseball SP's (short-prints) that are inserted into retail packs found at Target and Wal-Mart.

Packs at Wal-Mart have a Sarah Palin and a Pete Rose. Target packs have a "Shoeless" Joe Jackson and a Yankees tribute card. According to Upper Deck these cards are very rare, but did not offer up a print run.

As of this post, the only 2010 Upper Deck Sarah Palin Sp to hit eBay sold for $49.00 on 10 bids on 2/15/2010. I also only found one 2010 UD Pete Rose Sp, it sold for $25.25 with 12 bids.  I didn't see any of the Upper Deck Target Sp's hit eBay yet.

Friday's Future Star: Jason Heyward - Atlanta Braves

Most baseball collectors already know who Jason Heyward is considering he has cards that date back to 2006. Heyward was the minor league player of the year in 2009 so he is certainly on the hobby radar and quite possibly a Future Star in baseball. Before he makes his debut in the bigs (probably in 2010) you may want to check out some of his Rookie Card prices on eBay below to see if you think its worth the money to gamble on what could be the MLB's next superstar.

2006 Topps AFLAC Jayson Heyward #JH

Seen here is the 2008 Topps AFLAC Autograph version that was released in 2008. The original cards were released in 2006 and were not autographed. There is a PROMO version of the 2006 card that features a different photo of Jason and these typically sells for less than the regular version on eBay.

2007 Bowman Chrome Draft Jayson Heyward RC #54

Depending on how you view 'true rookie' cards, this could be your best bet. Considering his AFLAC versions sell in the 3 figures even not autographed you can get the next best thing with his 1st Bowman Chrome Card for a little less than $10.00 in most auctions on eBay.

2007 Bowman Sterling Jayson Heyward Autograph #JH

Another great option if you are looking for a Jayson Heyward autograph would be his 2007 Bowman Sterling. The white borders and crisp card stock has made this set very popular with grading submissions as many come back with top marks. These cards un-graded sell for just under $100 in most auctions on eBay.

2007 Donruss Elite Extra Edition EEE Jayson Heyward Auto #106

Another option for Autograph hunters would be his Donruss Elite Extra Edition, which are serial #/750 (there are many parallel versions as well) This is probably Jayson Heyward's most affordable Autograph as most sell for under $85.00 on eBay.

Unique Hall of Fame TTM Quilt Up For Auction

A one of a kind sports memorabilia item is up for auction in Missouri tomorrow. No not a rare baseball card or game used item. How about a hand made quilt, autographed by 340 players. Not just any players either, Sandy Koufax, Jackie Robinson, Yogi Berra, and Ted Williams to name a few.

Clara Rothmeierwho passed away last June, would stitch her favorite baseball players face on a piece of cloth, and then send the squares through the mail to get autographed by the player. Her success over the years is remarkable. The Baseball Hall of Fame even displayed the quilt in it's museum for over a year. The unique piece of sports history is expected to sell for over $25,000.

2009 Allen & Ginter Crack The Code Winner Interview

Topps has kept the winner of the 2009 Allen & Ginter Crack The Code Contest under wraps until now. You'll want to check out the full interview with one of the contest winners over at Sports Card Radio.

Here is a snippet from their conversation:

"It's crazy-exciting to think about being part of the 2010 Allen & Ginter set!  I think the hard part is not knowing exactly what Topps intends to do with the photos.  Nick and I each need to send in a jpg and then Topps will magically meld them together somehow."

Be sure to check out the full interview and also view the prized autographed set the code crackers received for being the first to crack the code!
