1966/67 Topps Bobby Orr Rookie Card KSA 9

The card generating the most buzz on eBay is this 1966/67 Topps Bobby Orr RC graded KSA 9.  With 251 watchers, it is the most watched card across all sports.

Earlier this month we tracked the price of a PSA 7 66/67 Topps Bobby Orr RC that saw the bidding end at $4,519.99. It will be interesting to see the price difference between the PSA 7 and KSA 9, because let's face it, KSA graded cards do not garner as much respect as ones graded by PSA.

2010 ITG Spring Expo Wrapper Redemption Program

Got a press release from In The Game announcing their participation in the Toronto Sportcard & Memorabilia Spring Expo from April 30 to May 2. The company will continue it's tradition of holding a Wrapper Redemption Program and here are all the details from ITG:

Toronto, ON - In The Game announces 2010 Toronto Sportcard & Memorabilia Spring Expo plans.

In The Game is pleased to announce that we will once again continue our long standing tradition of attending the Toronto Sportcard & Memorabilia Spring Expo from April 30 to May 2, 2010.

In The Game will hold our popular Wrapper Redemption Program featuring several of our 2009-10 products, including Superlative Hockey Volume Two - which is slated for release during the first day of the show!

"Collectors have expressed to me personally how much they are looking forward to the release of Superlative Hockey Volume Two and there's no greater stage than the Toronto Sportcard & Memorabilia Spring Expo to bring it to them," said In The Game's President, Dr. Brian Price. "We've developed a sensational redemption program for several of our 2009-10 releases and we wanted to demonstrate our unwavering support for both collectors and the industry by our presence at this show."

Here's how the Spring Expo Wrapper Redemption Program will meet the needs of our collectors:

Superlative Hockey Volume Two

For the release of Superlative Hockey Volume One, In The Game made collectors feel like VIPs with a solid redemption program that included Superlative Combo cards. These amazing and extremely limited cards are back once again as your reward for opening a book of Superlative Hockey Volume Two and you will receive two cards when you open your book at the In The Game booth.

While a checklist of Superlative Hockey Volume Two Redemption cards is not available at this time, the cards will contain anywhere from two to six memorabilia pieces each!

Heroes and Prospects

In The Game will also be producing one-of-one versions of game-used memorabilia cards from the 2009-10 Heroes and Prospects product that bears a special foil stamp exclusive to the Spring Expo. In order to obtain one of these special cards, collectors will need to open one sealed Hobby box of 2009-10 Heroes and Prospects.

Since its release in January, Heroes and Prospects has been one of the hottest products on the market and collectors are sure to appreciate some of the amazing pieces of memorabilia that they will receive as their reward for busting a box at the In The Game booth.

Between The Pipes

One of this year's hottest releases, the hobby has been buzzing about the game-used memorabilia cards found in packs of the SOLD OUT 2009-10 edition of Between The Pipes and they will have an opportunity to obtain special one-of-one versions of these cards exclusive to the Spring Expo.

Loaded with oversized and colorful memorabilia pieces and featuring the best goalies from yesterday, today and tomorrow; most collectors will be very pleased with their redemption cards.

All boxes and packs must be opened at the same time and all wrappers must be submitted to In The Game personnel. Boxes MUST have shrink-wrap with the In The Game logo on it to qualify. The redemption card offer extends through all three days of the show or while supplies last and daily limits may be imposed. In The Game reserves the right to limit the quantity of cards per customer and strives to set a two-book limit for each customer redeeming books of Superlative Hockey during busy times and they will be asked to return to the end of the line to redeem further books. Box tops from 2009-10 Heroes and Prospects, Between The Pipes or Superlative Hockey Volume Two products opened at the booth will be marked in order to exclude them from the ITG-VIP promotion.

No other In The Game products can be redeemed during the 2010 Spring Expo. The program is subject to all of the other standard rules and regulations of the ITG Wrapper Redemption Programs.

Collectors Concerned About Authenticity of 09 Ruth/Gehrig 1/1 Cut Auto

A very interesting discussion going on over at the Blowout Cards Forums, where some forum members are voicing their concerns about the authenticity of the Babe Ruth cut autograph from a 2009 Topps Triple Threads Ruth/Lou Gehrig Dual 1/1 Book Card.

A newspaper in Massachusetts originally printed a story about collector Aaron Norton pulling the card on Feb. 11th. Blowout Forums re-printed the story on February 12.  A person claiming to be Norton, said "the card had been sent to PSA DNA for verification."  That was on February 19th.

The card is currently on eBay, with no PSA/DNA authentication. Collectors on the forum are worried PSA/DNA rejected the Ruth autograph as a forgery. The auction still has over 6 days left and has a high bid of $5,800.00.  Let's hope savvy collectors can get to the bottom of this before the auction closes.

Update: Card taken off eBay. A member of Freedom Cardboard posted this response that s/he got from eBay:

Thanks for your interest in this listing:

While the vast majority of trade on our site is legitimate, we take many steps to protect our buyers from sellers who may offer items that are not authentic. One of them is to remove items reported to us as allegedly infringing through eBay's VeRO program. In this case, we removed the listing because the owner of a copyright and/or trademark in this product has reported to us that they believe the item may not be authentic.

We hope you'll understand that this action is intended to help protect you as a buyer.

Update II: Please be sure to check out Balk Four, and their write up about the card they did in January. Including pictures of other Ruth authentic autographs that do differ from the signature found on this 2009 Triple Threads Book Card.

NY Times: Upper Deck Not Paying Athletes

Wonder why you haven't received your redemption card from Upper Deck?  According to a New York Times article, the MLBPA has asked it's players to not return cards autographed to Upper Deck because UD is currently behind on it's payments.

The players union director for trading cards and collectibles Evan Kaplan sent an email out to player agents advising them to tell their clients: Not return to Upper Deck any autographs they had signed for the company or to enter into any new agreements with the company until the payments were made.

Yesterday, we learned that the company will continue it's layoffs that began in January. 119 people have been given a layoff notice in California alone. The company has also had to recently dole out multi-million dollar payouts to Konami (for counterfeiting Yu-Gi-Oh cards) and the MLB (for producing MLB cards without a license AND pay $2.4 Million it already owed). In addition, the NFL recently decided not to renew it's trading card license with Upper Deck.  It's widely rumored (and just plain common sense) that the reason why the NFL made it's decision is because of Upper Deck's current financial troubles.

2009 Topps T206 Baseball Pack Break

It's a rare day indeed that I will open a pack of cards, but I've always wanted to take a look at the 2009 Topps T206 cards and see them for myself. The Topps T206 cards are very impressive looking, but I am a little baffled at what looks like "oil" stains on the back. I know that it's supposed to give the cards a vintage look, but I think some collectors might think they got damaged cards if they aren't paying close attention to the set.

Nonetheless, here is what I got, and if anyone would like the cards feel free to email me at [email protected] I would be happy to send them to you.

1990 Frank Thomas No Name On Front NNOF BGS 6.5

This was the card when I was a kid that everyone wanted. At that time I was 8 years old and I would look into Beckett Baseball Magazine and see that it was worth several hundred dollars, which was enough to make me keep spending my quarters to buy packs in hopes of pulling the 1990 Frank Thomas NNOF error card. I never did end up getting one, and I might just have to buy one at a card show or on eBay some day.

A few 1990 Topps Frank Thomas No Name On Front error cards will pop up on eBay from time to time, and one such example is a BGS 6.5 that is currently for sale. The sub grades given to the card are: Centering 8, Edges 8.5, Corners 6, Surface 8.5.

2008 Jason Heyward Bowman Printing Plate 'Black' 1/1

So the kid can hit a little bit. I watched him flick an opposite field home run in San Francisco against the Giants that not a whole lot of left handed hitters can do in that park. Very impressive. The one negative to his swing is that he moves his head/body around a lot, and that may cause him to be prone to strike out and go into slumps because of that. Nonetheless Jason Heyward has the baseball card world on notice and his cards are heating up eBay everyday.

One of the more intriguing Jason Heyward Rookie cards to hit eBay the last couple days is this 2008 Bowman Printing Plate 'Black' 1/1 Autograph.

The card has a reserve price that the seller, moxacaine (100% Positive Feedback), says "is very reasonable considering the 2007 Bowman Chrome Superfractor Auto and 2007 Bowman Sterling Red Auto both sold for over $4500."

Tiger Woods Autograph Prices After Masters

Before the tournament we took a look at the prices for an Upper Deck Tiger Woods autograph card. We got a small sample of cards from 2001, 02, and 03. With Tiger's return to golf this week at the Masters, I wanted to go through and track the pricing to see if any movement happens.

It didn't hurt that Tiger had a good first round, where he hit a couple eagles, but also left a few shots on the course.  He currently sits just 2 shots off the lead at Augusta National - which will play much more difficult in the next three days. It all shapes up to a weekend of Tiger Woods back in contention, in his first tournament back since his cheating scandal hit the news in November.

Not a whole lot of Tiger Woods auto cards ended on Thursday. I am sure some of the people sitting on a Tiger auto will be keeping a close eye on the tournament, and many sellers have already put up autographs on 3 day auctions. I will update this thread after Friday's auctions end.

Round 2 Update:  Tiger played a great round of golf in the 2nd round of the Masters. They moved a lot of the tees back and also put the pins in tougher spots, so scoring was going to be higher. He sits just two shots off the -8 lead held by Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter. Just one Tiger autograph card ended on Friday! So much for getting a lot of data! Hopefully on Saturday and Sunday we'll see more cards ending.

Round 3 Update: Woods putter started to give him trouble and he missed several short putts. Just a few shots back, Tiger has put himself in a position to win despite the 5 month layoff.

Round 4 Update: Once again, the putter and some wayward tee shots hurt Tiger in the final round. He even looked like he hit a few of his drives fat which I've never seen him do before. The putter, like in round 3, was not the strength of his game.

Artist Makes Good Money Cutting Up Baseball Cards

LaVern Brock isn't your average baseball card collector. Like many, Brock will spend hundreds of dollars on cards every month. Instead of keeping the cards for safe keeping, Brock cuts all the cards into tiny pieces to use in his baseball themed works of art.

Some of the work is really well done. It doesn't surprise me one bit that in an interview with AOL News, Brock said each piece of baseball card art sells for at least $5,000.00.  You can check out all the artwork by LaVern Brock on his official website, Baseball Card Art.

Brock is also unlike a lot of collectors, in that he actually liked the over-production on cards in the 80's and 90's because it allows him so many choices when producing his art pieces.

"In the '80s and '90s, there started to be more types of cards, and that allows me to make collages with more variety."

2007 UD Sweet Spot Barry Bonds 756* Asterisk Card

A few years ago Upper Deck pulled off quite a stunt with the release of the 2007 Sweet Spot Barry Bonds 756* Asterisk Card.

In December 2007, a UD representative told Beckett Baseball Magazine that the card does exist "and it's one of the scarcest cards people will see in a long time." Early sales of the card were very high. $955 & $1,200 were the first two recorded sales.

At the time, Barry Bonds had an exclusive deal with Topps and it is widely thought that the card is as much a "cheap shot" at Topps as it is at Bonds. Read more about other controversial cards from 2007 here.

I've been watching a 2007 Sweet Spot Bonds Asterisk card pop on and off eBay for the last few days. The seller can't decide if he wants to just put it up for auction and let it run, or try and get a seller friendly buy it now price. Hopper331 currently has the 07 Bonds Asterisk card for sale priced at $1,400.00 or best offer. He had the card up for sale a few days ago but cut the auction short with 2 days left when the price was at $122.00.

The seller does have some questionable feedback, but noting about selling 'fake' cards.  So this appears to be a legit version of the 2007 Sweet Spot Barry Bonds 756* Asterisk Card.  One previous buyer left a negative comment about a damaged Herbert Hoover 2009 UD Signs of History Cut Auto ($360.55), but the seller has sold quite a few high end cards in the past and received positive feedback.

Jason Heyward Rookie Cards - Prices Soaring

The 20 year old rookie already had collector's attention before his debut 3-Run Home Run yesterday. Now it appears that the casual fans are jumping in feet first to get a piece of Jason Heyward while they still can.

Yesterday, we took a look at the most watched Jason Heyward Rookie Cards, and I am sure if I updated the list, a new batch of top Heyward RC cards would be getting lots of bids. Is it too late to buy at a good price? If Heyward's autograph starts selling for around what an Albert Pujols autograph would cost then you know things may have gotten carried away. So far, that hasn't happened, and it didn't hurt that Pujols also had a great opening day.

Upper Deck Awards: Snapshot Of Everything Wrong With Hobby

You want to know an interesting fact? In my almost 20 years working in hobby stores, not one time, not one single time has a customer ever come in and asked me about a sports card forum or blog. NEVER. That's tens of thousands of customers. That's thousands of worthwhile conversations about the hobby. From some very smart and intelligent people. Never once has anyone asked me about a baseball card blog or forum. In fact, very rarely is eBay even brought up, unless I bring it up.

It should come as no surprise then, that the only people who participated in the recently completed Upper Deck Awards were the people involved in the contest. The group of average collectors out there would dwarf any 30,000 member forum and certainly wouldn't care about Upper Deck's promotion.

Thank the baseball card god's the average collector didn't pay any attention to this contest. The UD Awards did more then ruffle a few feathers and inflate a few ego's. It probably ruined a few relationships along the way.  How the contest played out also had undertones of everything wrong with the hobby.  Greed, jealousy, throw in some possible "counterfeit" votes and I couldn't think of a more proper way for an Upper Deck contest to end.

Lost in all of this is who is at fault. Upper Deck. The company has laid off hundreds, admitted in court to counterfeiting Yu-Gi-Oh cards, owes the IRS millions because of questionable business practices, and yet a quick UD press release promising prizes can get many to ignore such facts. The contest was not well organized, thanks to Upper Deck.  Possible voting fraud was acceptable because Upper Deck used a generic poll website that allowed for such shenanigans.  It's been said some deserving sites, communities and box breakers didn't get nominated, which in the end might have worked out in their favor.

Another contest from another card company is probably already in the works. Enter at your own risk.

09/10 Blake Griffin 1/1 Patch Autograph Rookie Card

Even sitting on the sidelines injured all season has not hurt the sales of some Blake Griffin Panini Rookie Cards. His 2009/10 Panini Certified 1/1 Freshman Fabric Prime Parallel just sold for $660.00 on eBay.

Is there value in buying Griffin rookies now that he has missed the entire NBA season?  Depends on what you think of his game, but keep in mind he is on the Clippers, who have been a sad sack franchise for many years, and where players go to see their career, and card values die.

The seller did an awful job at promoting this Panini Certified Blake Griffin 1/1 which might have hurt the final price. The title of the auction was "Blake Griffin Jersey Auto #1/1" not putting the words Panini, Certified, Rookie and/or RC, and 09/10 in his title could have cost him a few bucks.  Despite the high price tag, this card was not one of the most watched Panini cards, and many people probably missed this one unless they were specifically searching for Blake Griffin.

Reader Questions: Tiger Woods TTM? Babe Ruth Card Value?

Let's open up the mailbag and answer a few questions from readers of this blog who've had a few questions.

Dan:  What would be the best way to obtain new signatures, from Tiger Woods, on a collection of his "Rookie Cards"? Think if I mailed them to him , registered, return postage guaranteed , that he might sign /authenticate them?

Sports Card Report: Unfortunately, sending cards to Tiger Woods to get autographed through the mail could be quite a frustrating experience. I have never heard of anyone obtaining a Tiger autograph through the mail. Having said that, I do have an autograph from Woods that I obtained in person at a golf tournament in Illinois several years ago.

My best advice would be to try and go see Tiger at a smaller PGA event, or even one of his charity tournaments that he puts on. Sure it might be expensive to get in, but you and your children will get to see some great golf, and be sure to follow Tiger before and after he finishes his round. During practice rounds would be the best time to get his autograph, or right when he comes off the practice putting green.  Will Tiger change his autograph habits since his public relations nightmare of 2009?  I am not sure, but I've seen him sign in person at golf tournaments on several occasions so it was possible in the past, and he might be more willing to sign now to get back into the good graces with fans. Typically he DOES NOT sign during the tournament - only during practice rounds, but I did get my in person autograph on a Thursday, at the PGA Championship no less.

Sports Card Report: Thankfully, I found a similar card that just ended on eBay. A Ruth Peak Performance, with a pinstripe as well, ended for $197.00.
